The January 2027 holidays list for the United States has two federal holidays: New Year’s Day on Friday, January 1, and Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, January 18. Both create a three-day weekend, and several religious and state observances fall in between.
Below is every date worth knowing, plus what closes, what stays open, and how New York City handles each one. For a full-year view, use our 2027 US holiday calendar.

Federal Holidays in January 2027
New Year’s Day: Friday, January 1
New Year’s Day always falls on January 1. In 2027 it lands on a Friday, so no weekday shift is needed and the long weekend runs January 1 to 3.
Most private employers also give the day off: in the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ holiday profiles, 90 percent of workers with paid holidays received New Year’s Day.
Martin Luther King Jr. Day: Monday, January 18
MLK Day is observed on the third Monday of January. That puts it on January 18 in 2027, three days after Dr. King’s January 15 birthday.
President Reagan signed the holiday into law in 1983, and it was first observed in 1986. Congress later made it a national day of service, which AmeriCorps leads through volunteer projects nationwide.
Private employers are not required to close. BLS data shows only 24 percent of private industry workers with paid holidays got MLK Day off, compared with 86 percent of state and local government workers. That data is from 2018, so check your employer’s 2027 policy.
Other January 2027 Holidays
These dates are not federal holidays, but they affect schools, churches, communities and local rules.
- January 6, Epiphany or Three Kings Day: Falls on a Wednesday. Puerto Rico treats it as an official Commonwealth holiday, and many Latino communities in the mainland US celebrate with parades and gifts for children.
- January 7, Orthodox Christmas: Churches following the Julian calendar celebrate the Nativity on this Thursday.
- January 14, Orthodox New Year: Also called Old New Year, it follows the Julian calendar’s January 1.
- January 19, Confederate Heroes Day: A Texas state holiday. Texas state agencies stay open with staff able to take a paid day off if they choose.
- January 22 to 23, Tu BiShvat: The Jewish “New Year for Trees” begins at sundown on Friday, January 22, and ends at nightfall on Saturday, January 23.
Lunar New Year does not fall in January 2027. It arrives on February 6.
January 2027 Holidays in NYC
New York City follows the federal calendar and adds a few local rules. Three matter most.
Alternate side parking. City law suspends alternate side parking on Three Kings’ Day and on all state and national holidays. The NYC DOT suspension calendar for 2026 lists January 1, January 6 and MLK Day. Expect the same pattern on January 1, January 6 and January 18, 2027, then confirm once the city posts its 2027 list.
Parking meters. Meters are suspended only on major legal holidays. That covers New Year’s Day, but not Three Kings Day.
Three Kings Day Parade. El Museo del Barrio hosts the annual parade in East Harlem on January 6. The 2026 route ran from 106th Street to 115th Street along Park Avenue. Check the museum’s website for 2027 details.
Plan Your Long Weekends
January 2027 has two built-in three-day weekends and requires no vacation days.
- January 1 to 3: New Year’s Day on Friday
- January 16 to 18: MLK Day on Monday
